Paying For Law School

A legal education is an important investment, and we’re committed to helping you finance your legal education through scholarships, fellowships, loans, and other funding opportunities so you can achieve your educational goals while minimizing debt.

Cost of Attendance

Cost of attendance is the estimated cost to attend the UO for the academic year. The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships provides estimates for cost of attendance information that goes beyond tuition and fees, and includes: living expenses (housing and food), books/supplies/equipment, transportation, and miscellaneous personal expenses.

Financial Aid

To apply for financial aid, such as federal loans, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is available at fafsa.gov. Be sure to designate the University of Oregon as a recipient using school code #003223. Please submit your FAFSA by March 1, 2026.

The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships makes financial aid awards for all students at the University of Oregon, including law students. When you receive your financial aid award notification, follow the steps to formally accept your financial aid, including completing promissory notes and entrance counseling. If you do not formally accept your financial aid, it will not be disbursed.

If you have questions about scholarships awarded by the University, federal financial aid, or private loan programs, please contact the financial aid office, located in 260 Oregon Hall. Always identify yourself as a law student when contacting financial aid.

Scholarships are available until they are awarded, though in rare instances a scholarship may go unawarded. Unless otherwise noted, all scholarships are a one-time award, with half of the total applied in the fall and half in the spring semester of the 2025-2026 academic year.

Fellowship Opportunities

The Oregon Law 1L Fellowship Program provides a unique opportunity for a small group of entering first-year law students to work with a professor or program director to assist with tasks such as project development, coordinating lectures and events, and performing research. As a 1L Fellow, you gain in-depth exposure in your fellowship area, and have a role in impacting real-world problems. You also gain mentorship as you work closely with professors or program directors.

1L Fellowships take place during both semesters of a fellow’s 1L year and come with a modest tuition stipend. Fellowship opportunities in the 2L and 3L years are also available.

Eligibility – Eligible applicants must be preparing to enter their first year in the J.D. Program at the University of Oregon School of Law. Fellows are selected on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated interest or experience in the area(s) selected.

Award Amount – 1L Fellows are awarded $5,000.00 ($2,500.00 awarded at the beginning of fall semester and $2,500.00 awarded at the beginning of spring semester.)

Multnomah Bar Association (MBA) Fellows and Lane County Bar Association (LCBA) Fellows carry a unique award structure that includes a minimum $20,000 Oregon Law Merit Scholarship (OLMS). If MBA or LCBA Fellows have already been awarded an OLMS, the committee will review the original award to ensure that the Fellow is receiving no less than $20,000. If an OLMS award received by a Fellow is $20,000 or more, the Committee has discretion to provide a modest increase.

Financial Assistance – Each fellowship provides $5,000.00 in tuition reduction. The 1L Fellowship lasts for one academic year Fall 2026-Spring 2027. (A student may only hold one fellowship.)

How to Apply – Incoming students can apply for fellowships through the UO Scholarship Dashboard. We encourage you to identify one (1), or a maximum of two (2), fellowship(s) that best aligns with your interests and experience.

Fellowship applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with a priority application deadline of March 1, 2026. Fellowships remain open until filled. (On a rare occasion, a fellowship may go unfilled.) Applications for fellowships may be submitted at the time you submit your application for law school or after you have been admitted to Oregon Law. All candidates will be notified when the process has been completed.

For additional information, contact the Admissions Office at lawadmissions@uoregon.edu or (541) 346-3846.

University Scholarships

Incoming 1L students may apply for the University of Oregon’s General University Scholarship. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is usually early in the year, so you should plan to apply as soon as possible.

JD students and applicants are also eligible to apply for many of the funding opportunities available through the University of Oregon Graduate School.

Outside Scholarships

Many organizations, such as the American Bar Association, offer a variety of scholarships for which JD applicants and incoming 1Ls may be eligible to apply.

The University of Oregon Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships offers resources for finding these scholarships, as well as a scholarship bulletin board.
